How BMI is calculated

BMI (Body Mass Index) is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²). It is a quick screening measure of whether your weight is in a range associated with good health. For example, someone 160 cm tall weighing 68 kg has a BMI of 68 ÷ 1.6² = 26.6.

Asian & Malaysian BMI cut-offs — why they are different

Most online calculators use Western cut-offs, where "overweight" starts at BMI 25 and "obese" at 30. But research shows Asians develop diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease at lower BMI levels. Malaysia's Ministry of Health (KKM) and the WHO therefore recommend stricter cut-offs for Asian populations — the ones this calculator uses:

BMI (kg/m²)Category (Asian / KKM)Health risk
Below 18.5UnderweightRisk of nutrient deficiency, muscle loss
18.5 – 22.9Healthy rangeLowest risk
23.0 – 27.4OverweightIncreased risk of diabetes & heart disease
27.5 and aboveObeseHigh risk — action recommended

This means a Malaysian with BMI 24 — "normal" on a Western calculator — is already in the increased-risk zone by local clinical standards.

Kalkulator BMI (Bahasa Malaysia)

Why BMI alone is not enough

BMI cannot tell the difference between muscle and fat, does not show where fat is stored (belly fat carries higher risk), and says nothing about your blood sugar, cholesterol or eating pattern. A muscular person can have a "high" BMI and excellent health; an older adult can have a "normal" BMI while losing dangerous amounts of muscle. That is why this calculator also estimates your calorie and protein needs — and why the numbers are a starting point, not a verdict. When to consult a dietitian

See a registered dietitian if your BMI falls outside the healthy range and you have — or are at risk of — diabetes, kidney disease, cancer, or heart disease; if you are losing weight without trying; or if you have tried to change your eating repeatedly without lasting results. A dietitian translates your medical history, blood tests and lifestyle into a food plan you can actually follow. Frequently asked questions

What is a healthy BMI in Malaysia?

For Malaysian adults, a healthy BMI is 18.5–22.9 kg/m² under the Asian cut-offs used by the Ministry of Health (KKM). BMI 23.0–27.4 is classified as overweight and 27.5 or above as obese — stricter than the Western thresholds of 25 and 30.

Why does this calculator use Asian cut-offs instead of the standard ones?

Asian populations develop type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease at lower BMI levels than Western populations. The WHO and Malaysia's KKM therefore recommend lower risk thresholds for Asians, and clinical dietitians in Malaysia assess patients using these ranges.

Is BMI accurate if I am muscular or elderly?

Not fully. Muscle weighs more than fat, so athletic people may show a high BMI despite low body fat. Older adults may show a normal BMI while losing muscle. BMI is a screening tool — waist circumference, body composition and blood tests give the full picture, which is what a dietitian reviews in consultation.

Does age affect my BMI result?

The BMI formula itself does not change with age, but its interpretation does — muscle loss in older adults and growth in teenagers change what a given BMI means. This calculator uses your age to adjust your calorie and protein estimates, and adults over 60 generally need more protein per kilogram to protect muscle.

How accurate are the calorie and protein estimates?

They use the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, the most validated formula in clinical practice, adjusted for your activity and goal. They are reliable starting estimates for healthy adults — but medical conditions like kidney disease change requirements significantly, which is why those results recommend dietitian supervision instead of a generic number.
